I was approached in Atlanta about setting up a 501c3 by a team from NJ. Does anyone have any great resources that might assist this team in setting up a not-for-profit to accept and disburse funds for the team? |

Team 2493 setup a 501(c)(3) using LegalZoom.com. It costs about $1,000 by using LegalZoom, which is a bit more than all the fees you would pay starting it on your own. The good thing is they know all the rules, and walk you through the process with a series of Q&A forms on their website. |

I'm sure that you can find (almost too much) information about setting up a non-profit from the internet, but I would suggest contacting a local law firm. They can guide you through the process and make sure that everything is done by the book to make the organization compliant with local and federal laws. Since the non-profit in question would be supporting technology education for children, many places would be willing to do this for a small fee or free of charge. When we set up our non-profit, we were able to get a local law office called Smith-Debnam to help us out pro bono. They ensured that we got all of the paperwork filed correctly, saving us a lot of headaches in the process. They continue to provide support, helping to fill out paperwork for things such as solicitation licenses. They even came to the NC regional to cheer for us! |
